Speak Cornish for Business Week – Kewsel Kernewek rag Negysyow

Last week, staff from our Communications team visited Kresen Kernow, in Redruth, as part of Speak Cornish Week.

The event; Kewsel Kernewek Rag Negysyow  was an informed and fun workshop, run by Cornwall Heritage Trust in partnership with An Rosweyth; a network of voluntary Cornish language organisations.

This year’s theme was Piw dn ni? – Who are we? and was aimed at how to use Kernewek (Cornish) in business and marketing.

The revival of the language is vital for preserving the unique identity, history and heritage of Cornwall, as the people are recognised as a national minority.

The event hosted by Emma Jenkin (Speak Cornish), provided a history of the Cornish language and the upcoming revival, which is seeing a significant increase each year, for people who are interested in learning  the language.

This increase is a result of the Cornish language being used more regularly, by writers, singers and film makers. There has also been an increase in the acceptance of the language, with more people willing to use words for businesses and for marketing purposes and a total of 30 primary schools signing up for the School Awards Scheme

Across Cornwall there are a variety of places and venues that provide Cornish language taster sessions, and you can access the a Cornish translator on Cornwall Councils website.
