We are extremely pleased to start 2025, as an official member of Fare Share Southwest, which became established in 2007, and is now the region’s largest food and environment charity, with warehouses situated in Plymouth and Bristol.
Fare Share is a national network of charitable food redistributors, made up of 18 independent organisations throughout the UK.
This amazing initiative provides good quality and nutritious surplus food, straight from the warehouse to community groups, school breakfast clubs, and frontline charities as part of their Weekly Delivery Plan. This food generates almost a million meals a week for vulnerable people
Having food delivered regularly has enabled us to widen our offering and provide a cooked breakfast as well as a lunch option, every day at our St Austell café.
Fare Share is run by 280+ volunteers of all ages from diverse backgrounds. These wonderful volunteers make it possible for charities like ours, to receive food donations, that help towards a nutritious meal for our residents.
These donations are being used as part of our Residents Academy to host our Food Hygiene course, in which residents have joined together to gain knowledge of the safety aspects when preparing and cooking food. This has resulted in the residents regularly cooking together and trying new recipes, with a wide variety of food. This week has seen us host a plant-based week as part of Veganuary, providing residents with the opportunity to try differing foods such as Tofu & meat-free alternatives which would ordinarily be financially inaccessible.
One of our clients who has a keen interest in cooking, has set up a daily menu that she intricately creates for the residents each week, based on the donations that we receive.
At Harbour, we believe that everyone should be supported and with these donations, our residents would like to continue this kindness, by providing food parcels to others, that are living in supported accommodation outside of our properties.
