PUMPKINS
Our wonderful Residents got into the Halloween spirit and carved pumpkins into ‘Jack-o-Lanterns.
Pumpkin carving has roots in many ancient cultures, particularly Celtic. Here in Cornwall, they first used turnips to create lanterns during the Celtic holiday of Samhain.
They believed that evil spirits lurked in the shadows around the bonfires they built to mark the end of summer and that the light from the carved turnips would scare them away.
The term ‘Jack-o’-Lantern’ was taken from an Irish Folk Tale called ‘Stingy Jack’. The story tells of a man named Jack, so devious he got himself thrown out from both Heaven and Hell and was cursed to walk the earth for all eternity, with only a hollowed-out turnip containing an ember from Hell to light his way.
The Pumpkin is a member of the Cucurbitaceae family. They are believed to have originated in Central America over 7,500 years ago and thanks to their solid, thick flesh, they were perfect for storing during cold weather.
MUSIC
A big Harbour Housing Congratulations to one of our talented residents, Will, who received a Certificate of Achievement for his acoustic guitar rendition of the famous song ‘Knocking on Heaven’s Door’.
This emotional song quickly became a worldwide hit and ranked at number 190 in Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2004.
Music releases endorphins which give us a natural sense of happiness. It can help to release emotions and help to lower cortisol levels to reduce anxiety and stress.
BOXING
One of our residents has been attending a local boxing club and was one of the boxers contending in a fundraising match held at St Piran’s Boxing Club in Redruth, in which Harbour Housing was their chosen charity. Everyone involved had a wonderful evening and we are extremely thankful for all of the donations.
The Benefits
Boxing has many benefits which include physical and mental health. It can help to lower blood pressure, build muscle, and reduce stress, anxiety and depression. It can also improve your sleep quality, confidence and overall well-being.
Tips
SURFING
Some of our residents headed to North Cornwall, where they enjoyed catching some gnarly waves with the team at Harlyn Surf School. Starting as complete novices to this surface water sport, the experienced surf instructors showed them the basics and made them aware of having fun while respecting the sea.
The Benefits
Surfing is a great cardiovascular exercise. The workout you get through surfing builds up heart strength through a mixture of paddling, standing on the board and working your core muscles. The impact it has on your overall fitness by improving your heart health is radical.
Tips
Surfing is one of the top ‘Blue health’ activities which draw on the known therapeutic effects of being active in or near water. We are so fortunate to live in an area, where we can access the sea and enjoy this rewarding activity.
